New Council Meeting Rules Could be Tested for Extra 3 Months

A test program to shorten City Council meetings and allow most public speakers to leave early could be extended an extra three months.

The Council on Tuesday will take up a staff recommendation to extend the pilot program set to expire December 31 that consolidates public comments at the start of meetings.

The city of Los Angeles will be reopening the waiting list for its Section 8 housing vouchers program for the first time in five years.

Starting Oct. 17, Angelenos will have two weeks to submit an application online for a chance to be added to a lottery waiting list. The last time Los Angeles opened its Section 8 waiting list was in 2017 — and nearly 188,000 people applied for only 20,000 available vouchers.

Combined, the loss of property tax paying buildings, the increase in new residents whose buildings don’t pay taxes for their schools and police, and the delayed uplift in regular property taxes from delayed property sales will have a severe impact on regular city tax revenues, lowering monies for police and schools.

Final Draft Housing Element on track for approval

The 185-page Final Draft Revised Housing Element states that the City of Santa Monica has identified “the capacity to accommodate at least 13,600 units providing a 53 percent buffer above the City’s RHNA of 8,895 units,” later adding that, “The buffer accounts for the likelihood that not all identified SSI sites may be necessarily developed by a property owner for housing. The land inventory includes capacity for 521 extremely low, 2,819 very low income, 2,703 low income, and 1,901 moderate income units.”

The poster child for over-development known as The Gelson’s project, located at Lincoln & Ocean Park Blvd’s has had its application deemed ‘complete’ by the City. Accomplished in part perhaps by avoiding/ignoring inquiries of concerned residents and local groups that had questions regarding compliance with various applicable codes and regulations; issues that could significantly impact and potentially require a reduction of the almost one million sq. ft. project.
