    Santa Monicans United (SMU)

    SMU has come together "against a backdrop of increasing deterioration in Santa Monica’s quality of life" due to a persistent homeless problem and a rise in crime, the group said.

    "Santa Monica is in crisis, and my heart goes out to the residents and struggling businesses that have been impacted by the city’s decline," Leana Greene, the group's CEO said in a statement.

    Santa Monica apartment rent prices went down 3.5% from November to December 2023. The median rent in the city now stands at $2,466 for a 1-bedroom and $2,956 for a 2-bedroom. Nationwide, rent price in December fell 0.8%, acting as the fifth consecutive month of decline after a mid-year peak.

    Priority for the direct payments, up to $30,000 per unit, will be given to those located in “high-need areas” and income levels at or below 80% of the LA County Area Median Income. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements, such as the rental property being within the County of Los Angeles (excluding the City of Los Angeles), and the landlord being able to provide independently verified authentic proof of ownership.

    The county’s Department of Consumer and Business Affairs launched its Rent Relief Program on Dec. 12. It will offer grants of up to $30,000 per unit to eligible landlords for expenses dating from April 1, 2022 to the present.

    The program is specifically designed to help small, mom-and-pop landlords who own up to four rental units, officials said.

    A clean-up crew contracted by the City to remove waste and debris left behind by the homeless could be brought "in-house" with expanded hours next spring, according to City officials.

    Deployed every Tuesday and Thursday since late September, the three-member Homeless Support Team (HoST) picked up 7.5 tons of trash in October and 30.7 tons in November as trash totals grow exponentially, City officials said.
