    In a little over a month, Santa Monica will end up in a new County Supervisorial District, possibly grouped with cities in the San Fernando Valley or in the South Bay.

    An independent Citizens Redistricting Commission comprised of 14-members, including one from Santa Monica, has been busy sorting through proposed districting maps.

    Specifically, the order adopts provisions of the Los Angeles County's Covid-19 Tenant Protections Resolution, including residential eviction protections (such as no-fault termination of leases, owner move-ins, nuisance, and unauthorized occupants or pets). The supplement also revises the email (EMReports@santamonica.gov) to which landlords should send any eviction notices.

    The transition starts this months for some customers, with the utility company transitioning others over the next six months.

    An estimated 2.3 million residential customers will be affected.

    The new time-of-use plans, which differ from tiered rate plans that charge solely on how much electricity is consumed by a customer, feature different rates for power based on the time of day it’s used.

    Rents in Santa Monica continued growing slowly, inching up another 1 percent in October as the national rental market cools, according to Apartment List's latest report released Monday.

    The increase comes after rents ticked up 0.8 percent in September and marks the 10th straight month rents have increased in the beach city.

    On Monday morning, deputies from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, outreach workers and other officials–including L.A. Public Works Department– ​began the process of relocating the homeless outside the West Los Angeles VA. According to the Los Angeles Homeless Service Authority, most of the veterans are being moved into motels, with some moving into tents on VA property or directly into permanent housing.

    The City of Santa Monica’s Forty-First Emergency Supplement signed October 29, 2021, extends the City’s remaining local emergency orders through January 31, 2022. It also extends the City’s protections against eviction for reasons other than nonpayment of rent and renews the landlord’s eviction reporting requirement.

    Roger Thornton -- a founding member of Santa Monicans for Renters' Rights (SMRR) who played a major behind-the-scenes role in turning the grassroots group into a local political powerhouse -- died in his Santa Monica home Wednesday. He was 79.

    Conducted between October 21 and 27, the poll of about 165 "civically engaged" residents measured their reaction to a high profile attack by a homeless woman on a reality television contestant ("Homeless Attack in Santa Monica Makes International Headlines," October 19, 2021).

    Ninety-one percent said the attack -- which garnered international headlines -- "should be a catalyst for city officials to reconsider their current approach to addressing crime and homelessness."

    The City’s budget remains in active recovery with reserves helping fill the gap for a balanced budget. Fewer reserves will need to be leveraged due to revenues coming in six percent higher than anticipated as a result of the active housing market; higher sales, hotel tax and parking receipts; and the positive impact of the recently passed Measure SM Real Property Transfer Tax increase.
