Santa Monica 's Housing Target Finalized at Nearly 8,900 New Units

anta Monica must plan to build 8,895 new housing units by October 2029 under the final housing allocations adopted Thursday by the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG).

The final allocation -- which requires that 69.3 percent of the units be affordable -- reflects the numbers released last month, which added 22 units to last year's draft allocation.

As a resident of the city, I heartily agree with the survey that found 80 percent of residents believe that homelessness is getting worse ("Poll Finds Residents Waiting for New Council to Act on Crime and Homelessness," February 17, 2021).

And I do not agree with the staff report's finding that the current strategy is "working." ("Santa Monica on Right Track Tackling Homelessness, City Officials Say," February 22, 2021).

Santa Monica Rents Rebound, Home Prices Third Highest in Nation

Rents in Santa Monica rebounded for the first time since the coronavirus shutdown began one year ago, while the city's home prices are now the third highest in the nation, according to two surveys released this month.

City Council Poised to Halt Commercial Development on Possible Housing Sites

Santa Monica is poised to temporarily halt commercial development in zones that allow housing in an effort to meet a "very large" state mandated quota for affordable units.

The emergency ordinance the City Council is expected to approve on Tuesday would bar commercial projects in the Bergamot area, the Hospital Mixed Use zone and the Industrial Conservation zone.

This week, the City of Santa Monica launched a new online survey in English and Spanish seeking input from Santa Monica’s workforce related to their transportation and housing needs. Every eight years, information gathered from the Santa Monica Employee Transportation and Housing survey helps the City understand how workers travel and their housing preferences, and gathers race and income demographics of Santa Monica’s workforce in preparation of the Housing Element update, now underway.
