KNOW WHAT I’M GOING TO DO?

    After the election?

I’m going to start writing about all the good things that go on in our fair city, all the good things our City staff does, all the good that comes from our elected officials. There’s plenty of it. And won’t that be uplifting? And a lot nicer for me?

    However —

I can’t in good conscience do that until those people stop doing way more harm than good. I know they don’t see themselves that way, but many of us do, and that’s something they really should pay attention to. But they don’t.

For Rent Control Board you have three challengers to the all-lawyer board. One is a lawyer, also coming straight from SMRR. Of the other two, only one is a property owner and as I said last election, it’s not right to not have them represented, with at least one member, since all the RCB business concerns also property owners. It makes sense to get them in the mix for the best outcome for our many renters. I will bullet vote for only that one.

    Editor:

As a past Rent Board Commissioner, Planning Commissioner and past president of the Santa Monica Democratic Club I say, Prop 10 is a disaster for tenants and property owners in Santa Monica: it is poorly written, bad for homeowners and condo owners and taxpayers, and will cost millions to enforce statewide according to State Legislative Analyst Office.

Gavin Newsom, our next governor does not support prop 10. John Chang, Villaragoso, the State Legislature, the NAACP and the building trades unions are all opposed.

November 15, 2018 -- The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday began hearing arguments in a lawsuit filed by Airbnb and HomeAway that seeks to invalidate key sections of Santa Monica's pioneering homesharing law.

Attorneys for the two online companies are seeking to invalidate portions of the City's law that penalize online platforms for booking short-term rentals of unlicensed properties.

On Friday, the plaintiffs argued that the local ordinance is upending their business model by forcing them to remove illegal listings and poses an economic threat to the growing industry if other cities follow suit, according to a report in courthousenews.com.

Plans to construct a mixed-use complex featuring apartments and offices at the current site of Martin Cadillac in West Los Angeles can move forward, according to a ruling last week by California's Second District Court of Appeal.

The Martin Cadillac project calls for the construction of a 10-story, 160-foot tall office building featuring roughly 200,000 square feet of rentable space.  A seven-story, 516-unit apartment building is planned for the northern and western perimeter..
