Residocracy is in the beginning stages of building a treasury to fund its campaign for a ballot measure that, if approved, would radically change the development approval process in Santa Monica and put many decisions in the hands of the voters.

    FOLLOW THE MONEY, HONEY

I don’t think our City Council members have bad intent. I believe they are convinced they are doing what’s best for Santa Monica. But I believe they have been influenced by moneyed interests or their own pursuit of power, and have lost perspective.

After nine months, Santa Monica’s crackdown on short-term vacation rentals – one of the most aggressive in the nation -- is being called a success so far by its enforcers.

A report to the City Council this month states that enforcers have collected more than $40,000 in fines, yanked more than 600 illegal listings and closed about 100 cases by winning compliance to the new tougher rules.

The City of Santa Monica raised eyebrows after approving a $500,000 contract earlier this month to an outside media firm to handle marketing for the already highly publicized arrival of the Expo Light rail line on May 20.

The Tuesday the City Council will be asked to approve another $407,000 for a one-day street party to celebrate the arrival of the Expo Light Rail Line in Santa Monica.

    Description:

Panelists, including architect Thurman Grant and architectural historian Steven Treffers, discuss how the dingbat apartment is synonymous with LA’s rapid post-war urban expansion. Often dismissed as ugly and mundane, dingbats are nevertheless rare examples of consistency in typologic design during the city’s 20th century sprawl.

A few days ago, the Planning Commission voted 6 to 1 to recommend that City Council approve a development agreement for a seven-story (84 foot) mixed-use apartment building at 500 Broadway, formerly Fred Segal. This development by DK Broadway LLC, designed by Koning Eizenberg Architecture is a classic example of everything that’s wrong with our planning process and why it must be changed from top to bottom.

The new Expo Line light rail extension from Culver City to Santa Monica doesn't open until May, but rental prices are already way up along the new track. An analysis by RadPad shows that, on average, rents have risen nearly 15 percent in the neighborhoods around the forthcoming stations, with an increase of more than 45 percent at the Westwood Rancho Station.
