Santa Monica Downtown Plan Will “Open Floodgates” to Massive Development, Group Contends

The new draft plan for downtown development over the next 20 years will open the “floodgates” to massive development, clear the way for mega-projects and blot out the last of the city’s beach town charm, one of Santa Monica’s two major slow-growth organizations said Monday.

Signature gathering to place the LUVE (Land Use Voter Empowerment) ballot initiative before Santa Monica voters in November kicked off yesterday at a rally at the Robert Berman Gallery in the Bergamot Station Arts Center.

The initiative empowers residents to take control of major land use decisions in Santa Monica by imposing more conservative height and density limits citywide as well as have a direct say on the shape and scope of new developments within City borders.

A resident of 1519 12th Santa Monica is breathing a sigh of relief today after being awarded a total $825,000 by Los Angeles Superior Court after suing his landlords for public disclosure of private facts.

Craig Miller is chief executive of a Los Angeles office-leasing firm. He's also a landlord, with seven houses for rent around the region.

As Miller tells it, the tenants at one of his properties, a house in Calabasas that rents for $5,225 a month, stopped making payments last summer. Miller began eviction proceedings in August.

Anderson-Warren has been named Santa Monica’s new City Clerk, a job she says will be challenging but also exciting – especially in a city with no shortage of controversies that usually pass through her office, mostly on the way to the City Council or a public ballot.

Her base pay is $15,269 a month, officials said in announcing her job on February 23.
